Gold Rush in the 4th Grade

On Friday the 21st the 4th graders took part in a Gold Rush Day. They have been studying it for awhile. So after the awards assembly I got to stay and help out with it. They had a list of activities to show how the Minors lived and worked each day. They searched for Gold, Sorted it out from Fools gold to Real Gold, then they panned for it. They had a small claim space that two people would use and they panned. After that they had to figure out how much gold they found and then use it to buy materials. They went to the General Store. Afterwards they ate grub, and had a hoedown. The kids learned how to dance like the Minors did back then. I got to stay all up to the General Store. Then I had to pick up Ky and get Issy.

When they searched on the ground for Gold, Chelsey was doing an amazing job. But her friends weren't so lucky. So she decided that they would all hunt together and split their earnings. There was 3 of them. Chelsey, Jocelyn and Annete. After searching they went back and had to seperate the real from fake. Then they turned in their real good for the balance of a treate..like rolo's or reeses's in the Gold wrapper.

Chelsey all dressed the part of a Minor..even with a little "dirt" on her face to show how tough and dirty it was.

LOOK..WE FOUND A BUNCH!!!

Chelsey still searching for gold

Awe...Fools Gold

Sorting their gold..real gold from the fools gold

Her and Jocelyn in their small Claim space. Mrs. Dhouti had taught them that the minors had to rent out a claim space to do their panning. It wasn't very big either.

Chelsey is getting frustrated with the fact that she has found hardly any gold in the panning activity. I told her that the minors sometimes went days without finding any at all. That this was their life day in and day out... She said..Wow I don't know if I could do that.

The red lines marked their tiny claim. Here she is still panning and only finding a couple pieces.

Mrs. Dhouti took these pictures of each child and had them developed for them. I thought it was great!
